THE successful Alleygates initiative is set to be extended to new areas of Barry following a major European funding boost.

Around £80,000 from the European Union's Objective 2 programme through the Welsh Assembly Government will be match-funded by the Vale of Glamorgan Council (£50,000) and Safer Vale Partnership (£30,000) to enable Alleygates to be extended primarily across the town's Buttrills ward.

Gates have already been installed in the Castleland, Court and Cadoc wards where the programme will continue.

The £160,000 funding will enable 50 additional gates to be installed, a move welcomed by Buttrills ward members Cllrs Margaret Alexander and Stuart Egan.

They said: "We welcome the expansion of the scheme. People living in the Buttrills ward in streets off Holton Road have been eagerly awaiting the approval of funding, and now look forward to further protection for their properties."

By closing off escape routes through the erection of special security gates at both ends of back lanes and alleyways, with only adjacent residents and authorised bodies given unique keys, the project reduces the opportunity for burglaries and other forms of crime and disorder.

Ieuan Wyn Jones, Deputy First Minister and Minister for the Economy and Transport at the Welsh Assembly, said he was delighted to continue funding support for the project.

He added: "It is clear that this scheme, using European Objective 2 Transitional Funds, has proved highly successful in helping prevent crime and disorder.

"The new Regional Competitiveness and Employment programmes for East Wales will build on these positive steps, regenerating communities and bringing benefits to people across the region."

Keith Jones, operational manager (highway maintenance) and Alleygates project manager, said: "This scheme is an excellent example of the partnership between the council, the South Wales Police and the Fire Service."

Inspector Andrew Rice, Barry sector inspector with South Wales Police, said: "Dramatic reductions of up to 74 per cent in different types of crime and disorder have followed the introduction of the security gates.

"Residents are telling us how safe they feel when the gates are installed."

Keys for the next phase of the scheme will be distributed at the County Library (Barry) on the following dates:

Friday, March 14, (2-6pm) and Saturday and Sunday, March 15 and 16, (10am-1pm).

Keys will be available for the following addresses:

We have today received notification from you RE: the collection of keys for the alley gates. Unfortunately, the date for collection has passed and we are in need of keys for several properties listed above, as we are an Estate Agent and Management Agency. Is there an alternative location where we can collect them? Council offices for instance, it would be greatly appreciated if you could supply as much information as possible. Kind Regards. Stephen Draper
