Sports beat the weather - and the opposition

SULLY SPORTS 4

ST JOSEPHS 1

THE NORTHERLY wind severely affected play in this South Wales Senior League Division One encounter played on a good surface at Swanbridge.

It was very difficult to control the ball at times, and both teams took a while to settle.

The Sports front two of Richard Yarr and Andrew McIlhiney troubled the Joes' defence and with Ferguson and Underdown gaining plenty of possession they created the chances.

On the half hour an excellent centre from McIlhiney was met perfectly by Ross Taylor who swept the ball past the keeper to give Sully the lead.

The no-nonsense approach from the visitors kept the referee busy and following a skirmish, two yellow cards were shown.

The second half saw Sports on top and playing some of their best football, and they deservedly went further ahead when Richard Yarr raced through, beat a defender and placed a stunning shot high past the keeper.

A similar move ended with the keeper committing a professional foul on Yarr and he saw red, but the resultant free kick was cleared.

Sports took their foot off the gas for a while and Joes pulled a goal back as the ball squeezed through a crowded area into the corner.

A good reply from Sully saw Yarr score from a narrow angle and Anthony Ferguson completed the scoring with another well taken goal.

Barring the one lapse, the Sports defence of Taylor-Moore, Govier, Jones and Lewis played very well with keeper Lack commanding his area.

This Saturday Sports travel to Cwmbach, leaving the Tynewydd at 12.15 pm.

SULLY SPORTS 2

The young Sports team did well to be in contention at half time in last Saturday's Vale Premier League match, with the scores level at 2-2 through strikes from Jacob Constant and Linford Harris.

But some sloppy defending enabled SP to pull away to secure the points at a windswept Pencoedtre. Outstanding for Sports were Tavian Ludvigson and Anthony Connell.

This Saturday Sports host Bluebirds at Sully, kick-off 1.15pm.

CADOXTON IMPS 4

The Division One team went down to leaders Cadoxton Imps at Swanbridge but the game was a close contest until the last 10 minutes when the strong Imps team cut loose and in the end won comfortably.
