| CELEBRATION: Barry Town players and supporters celebrate promotion at |
Pontyclun 0
Barry Town 3
PROMOTED Barry Town secured victory on Tuesday night when they ran out
comfortable winners against Pontyclun in their last game of the season.
Town could have won the title, but rivals Bettws also won on the same night
so The Dragons finished the season in second place and are promoted to
MacWhirter League Division One.
Barry's 21st win of the season, out of 34 matches, also doomed Pontyclun to
relegation.
Town took the lead on 20 minutes when Christian Mills was put through from a
Jamie Bradford pass and calmly stroked the ball passed the oncoming keeper -
to the roars and French horn of the large travelling band of supporters.
Pontyclun were playing a dangerously high defensive line against Mills' and,
but for many offside decisions, the striker could have scored more.
A couple of minutes later, Rhys Jones made it 2-0 to the Town.
Starting near the touchline, Jones made a jinking run, ran on a couple of
paces and then curled a super shot into the far left of the net from 25
yards out - a fine individual goal.
Captain Jamie Bradford rounded the Pontyclun keeper two minutes later and
from wide curled the ball to the far post - but a defender managed to clear.
Jeff MacLean came on as a substitute for Geraint Goodridge who suffered a
groin strain.
The second half started well for the Town when Rhys Carr made a run down the
right side and crossed for Jones, whose header was tipped over.
Jones was then injured in a clash of heads with a defender - but resumed
play wearing a bandage Terry Butcher style!
Two minutes later, Lewis Cosslett was denied his first goal of the season
when his header bounced off the crossbar.
Seven minutes from time, Mills crossed to Rob Blatchford who chested the
ball down, went past the last defender, and drilled a 20-yard shot home to
make it 3-0.
The points - and promotion - were Barry's!
Christian Mills finished the season as top scorer on 20, with Jamie Bradford
second on 17.
