AN ELITE gymnastic group is appealing for help with fundraising efforts aimed at sending them to an international competition.

The elite team of four, who recently received a cheque from the Barry Lions Club for £100, have so far raised £500 themselves for their trip to Malta.

The Barry YMCA Gymnastic club youngsters, aged nine to 13 years, hope to travel abroad in July - but need to raise £2,000 in order to make the tour.

The Barry Round Table have also contributed £50 to the fund.

Senior Gymnastics Coach, Sara Harper, said the competition would provide the girls with international experience.

She said: "It's a really good opportunity for them to compete abroad and it's a learning experience for them also.

"We would like to thank the Barry Lions and the Barry Round Table for the donations so far."

Barry Lions Club spokesman, David Langford, said: "We raise funds locally, and we always try to assist local people or organisations - particularly elderly, disabled, or other disadvantaged sections of the community.

"We know that with Sara's girls they've been fundraising themselves, and it's great that an effort has already been made by them rather than just asking for help."

"The £100 was a nominal amount to encourage and help them on their way, with the proviso that if their efforts leave them with a shortfall, they should contact us again."

Any further donations would be welcomed and anyone wishing to contribute should contact Sara at the Barry YMCA.
