Stag back in action

BARRY Athletic Cricket Club began their season at home to Rogerstone in front of a sell out Barry Island Oval. New skipper Ian Gray Nichs' Gadd led the Barry team who fielded first.

Opening the bowling was club chairman Peter Sicknote' Hellyar who was starting his 33rd season at the club, 32 of them as chairman.

It was Sicknote' who gained the breakthrough with a sharp catch from club legend Gary Loves tossing for fish' Morgan behind the stumps. True to form Hellyar got injured and was taken out of the attack.

At the other end was crowd favourite Steve Stevo' Jones who bowled his 10 overs beautifully and took 1 wicket for 25 runs, a top effort.

Club clown Phillip Thomas and the ever impressive Andrew Buckland bowled next with Phil I'm not so large anymore' Thomas, rolling back the years and getting hit all over the Island and taking the one lucky wicket.

On the other hand, Andrew Buckland was bowling some magic deliveries taking 3-31 and ripping through the middle order. New signing Razz razza' Zahid polished off the tail with figures of 3-35 and Rogerstone all out for 231. A great performance from Razza on debut.

Thanks to Mrs Walcott for the half time spread, her mystery dish this week was the jam doughnuts. Wealthy chairman Hellyar spoiled the Stag faithful during the tea interval with the cast of Gavin and Stacey signing autographs to thousands of fans.

Barry in reply started poorly with Buckland, Gadd and Lee Morgan falling cheaply to the bowling of John Berry. At 16-3, Barry needed a true legend if they were going to make a fight of this game; step forward Gary Morgan who, with opener and party animal Damon Leake, made batting look very easy with some classy stroke making.

Leake passed a deserved 50 but was caught on the boundary for 68. Wickets began to fall around Morgan apart from Phil Thomas who made a typically slow 24 off 5 scoring shots.

Gary Morgan was eventually out for 57 and Barry finished 36 runs behind Rogerstone's total.

Stag Sports News caught up with club legend Gary Morgan who had this to say: "Gutted about the result today, we deserved more but on a personal note I feel fitter than ever and can't wait for next week. I'm like a new born salmon leaping out of the sea."

Barry 2nd XI v Ponthir 2nds

Skipper Martin Mr Negative' Baker took the Barry second eleven to Ponthir and was asked to bat on a pitch that can only be described as wetter than Martin Baker's pants after running a marathon in Africa'.

Ex skipper Ian Davies had to work hard for his 31, the best of Barry's batsmen as Barry struggled and lost wickets.

The exciting Owain Kev' Davies was unlucky when he sneezed and hit his own wicket.

The hot weather then dried the pudding of a pitch into a batsmen's paradise.

14-year-old Jake Griffith opened the bowling, a bright prospect and the other bowler was Martin Negative' Baker who tried his best, love him.

Ponthir cruised to a 7 wicket win with leg spinner Richie Roberts 1-23, Ashley Baker 1-24 and Neil Harry' Holmes 1-37, the pick of the bowlers.

A furious Martin Baker moaned: "They were lucky with the toss and the pitch, we weren't at full strength. Kev was unlucky, I had a bad lbw decision against me. I didn't have my lucky pants on and we dropped too many catches.

Apart from that there's no excuses - they deserved to win."

Barry 3rds v Machen 3rds

Barry 3rd eleven skipper, Bradley Dodd in his eighth season as captain lost the toss and was asked to bowl. Surprisingly Barry took early wickets with Mitchell Asbo' Moore and Simon Under the thumb' Phillips taking 2 apiece.

Taylor Moore went off injured as his tag was starting to rub and he has to be in bed by 7pm.

Left arm seam of promising youngster Jake Griffith took the next wicket with Barry's youthful attack bowling Machen out for 112 inside 30 overs.

Tom Walcott took 1-9 off 3 overs, Ashley Glider' Baker took 1-12 and Richie my head is in wembley' Roberts claimed 2 wickets.

A great effort in the field especially from youngsters Sam Eastman, Bradley Dodd, Calum Twoomey and wicketkeeper Jophin Henry' Reji.

Barry got off to a flier with Richie Roberts looking good for a 50 but then Simon Lightweight' Phillips decided to run poor Richie out for 14. A few words were exchanged after the game.

A hungover Ashley Baker came and went for 13. Simon Phillips saw his partner in the crowd and, missing her like the desert misses the rain, decided to get a move on.

Phillips brought Barry home with an unbeaten 58 and had this to say to StagSportsNews: "I dedicate this performance to my significant other Sarah.

She's like my rock and one day hopefully she'll be Mrs Phillips".

Last Saturday a fellow Stag Stephen Reginort Jones got married to the beautiful Tania. The club would like to say congratulations and wish them both all the best for the future. A lovely couple.
