Centurions: All the action

AFTER LOSING the toss Centurions were surprised to be put in on a lovely hot day at Burnham Avenue, and the top order batsmen made Panteg pay for this error of judgement.

After Ryan and Jamie Sylvester put on 50 for the first wicket Lloyd Smith and James Langworth had fun dispatching the visiting attack to all corners.

Lloyd was out for 93 and Langers reached a half century, and this was followed by some swashbuckling batting from Tom Evison, Rhett Jones and Andrew "Diver" Davies. The total after the 50 overs was 303-5.

After tea Diver and Ryan put the Panteg batting to the sword, with 3 wickets apiece, ably supported by Tom Evison and Terry Williams who ended with 2-13.

The game ended in the 34th over when the last batsman was out with the score on 102.

Sully 303-5. Panteg 102 all out.

SECONDS BEATEN

The trip to Abergavenny brought a third successive defeat for the 2nds. The home side batted first and thanks to a couple of good knocks (Barnsley 72 and Viveash 66) reached 200-7 after the allotted 50 overs.

The best Centurion bowling figures came from Steve Hood, who took 2-36 off his 8 overs and Shae Ellis (2-44).

The Centurion reply saw some decent individual scores (Matt Thomas 40, Owain Lovering 33, David Goodway 31) but the runs dried up and they were all out for 158.

Abergavenny 200-7. Sully 158 all out.

The 3rd XI were beaten by a powerful Mountain Ash side.

Mountain Ash 240-8. Centurions 143 all out. C Taylor 60.

>FOURTHS HEROICS

The 4th XI faced Mountain Ash with a much changed side, thanks to late call-ups by the Thirds, and they gave debuts to Alex Grey and John Edwards.

The batting was pretty poor, apart from a spirited 28 from Barney, but some accurate bowling kept the score in check and wickets tumbling.

For Mountain Ash, Cooper's 4-7 off 10 overs included no fewer than 7 maidens and the visitors had Centurions all out for a paltry 67.

In fact it could have been a lot worse if it hadn't been for a last wicket partnership of 15 between Lewis Cuddihy and Alex Grey.

The Sully bowlers had it all to do and they responded to the challenge magnificently.

Openers Nathan Cuddihy and Josh Bryan took 8 wickets between them, with Nathan ending with 5-28 and Josh posting figures of 3-21.

This, coupled with a fantastic run-out by Josh with a direct hit, set up a final few overs that could have gone either way.

However, the target was reached off a leg bye and Mountain Ash had scrambled home by 1 wicket. So, a defeat, but a fantastic effort in the field gave Sully plenty to be proud of. Who says low scoring matches can't be exciting?

Sully 67 all out. Mountain Ash 68-9.
