Imps are champions again!

CADOXTON IMPS 3

MASTER MARINER 2

LAST YEAR'S Division 2 champions Imps added this year's First Division title to their trophies, with this thrilling win over close rivals the Mariner.

This was always going to be a tight game with Imps needing to win and their opponents just needing a draw.

Imps had to ditch their game plan as the Mariner opted for a long ball game which mainly consisted of their goalkeeper launching the ball from one area to the other.

The Mariner opened the scoring straight from a corner kick which was deflected into the net by Imps fullback Rob Collings.

The rest of the half was pretty even - but Imps were denied by some disputed offside decisions.

Imps were on top at the start of the second half with Chris Leach giving the Mariner real problems from dead ball situations, and this allowed Gavin Lewis to beat the offside trap and race in to fire home the equaliser.

Mariner continued to pepper Imps with long balls which were well marshalled by Imps defence of keeper Evans, Collings, Jones, Gavin Hazlewood and man of the match Mathew Squires, but with 15 minutes to go, an incredibly long kick from their keeper eluded the defence and allowed the Mariner to steal the lead again.

Substitutes Morris and Hatton were introduced for the Imps and with the older Mariner players running out of steam, the superior fitness of the Imps started to tell - and with Craig and David Hazlewood pushing forward, a super ball from the left found skipper John Jones at the far post to coolly slot home the equaliser.

With less than 5 minutes to go the Imps, urged on by centre forward Rhys Jones, mounted a final attack and were awarded a throw-in deep inside the Mariner half of the pitch.

Rob Collings delivered perfectly into the six yard area for Jones to head into the net for his 35th goal of the season, and win the match.

Following the presentation of the League Trophy at the Sports Centre, celebrations continued into the small hours.

Imps would like to thank Master Mariner for their sportsmanship during and after the game and wish them well for next season.

Also thanks to Steve and his staff at the Colcot Arms for the after-match hospitality.
